“Oh, we don’t carry books anymore. They scare the customers away.”
~ Bookstore staff, Totally Spies - The Movie
It made me laugh but also made me feel a little sad. I am so afraid this will actually happen someday. It’s not just that everything’s going digital. So many people just don’t seem to have time for books anymore.
I've been thinking about this recently as well. Somebody mentioned the possibility of books disappearing some time ago, and I realized there may have been more truth to it than I had originally thought. To be honest, I'm not completely opposed to the change toward a digital medium, though I would miss the feel of flipping pages. What matters more to me is how thoughts get conveyed. Az l0ng az tingz dun get writn lyk tiz, I'll be alright with it. It's not just the grammar, but the fact that content just doesn't seem as important anymore. Is there a need to condense all your thoughts about your last vacation, or a friend's wedding, or an especially poignant novel into 140 characters or less? Anyhow, enough about that. Seeing as they still exist, I wouldn't mind if libraries and bookstores were to stick around for a while longer.
ReplyDeleteI think that part of the problem (well, at least I think it's a problem) might be that people's attention spans seem to be getting shorter. That's why there might be people who prefer the 140 word version as opposed to the full on experience. There's also the fact that with so many things becoming digital it's actually getting harder to find good things to read because there's just so much stuff to slog through. Networking seems to have become more important than the actual work itself. It's all kind of depressing.
